EASA · Competency-Based Instrument Rating
CB-IR(A)
Go beyond VFR.
Real instrument competence for real-world flying. Our CB-IR(A) theoretical training gives you the knowledge to operate safely and confidently in instrument meteorological conditions – efficiently, flexibly and with a clear focus on practical application.
Horizons
Turn potential into precision
Take the next step – with confidence
The CB-IR(A) builds on your existing skills and takes you to the next level. With a competency-based approach, you gain the theoretical foundation to operate in complex IFR environments – from en-route to approach, in single-pilot operations, and beyond.
Build the theoretical competence for your instrument flight training – and open the door to new destinations, in all weather conditions.
Your path to the full IR(A)
A competency-based journey.
The CB-IR(A) leads to the full EASA Instrument Rating – with a training route designed around competence, and the ability to take account of instrument flight instruction you have already received. For many pilots it is the most efficient route to full IFR privileges – without compromising the standard of the final rating.
Start your approved CB-IR(A) theoretical knowledge training with Cranfield.
Complete the 80-hour approved course – structured self-study with instructor support.
Pass the theoretical knowledge examinations in the seven IR subjects.
Complete the competency-based practical route with an EASA ATO – prior instrument experience can be credited.
Pass the skill test and add the full Instrument Rating to your licence.
The CB-IR(A) theory
Seven subjects. Full IR(A) knowledge level.
The 80-hour approved theoretical knowledge course covers the complete IR syllabus – the same seven subjects and knowledge level as the conventional instrument rating, delivered in a focused, efficient format.
What the full IR(A) unlocks
Standard minima. Real weather. Mission accomplished.
Breaking out of cloud with the approach lights ahead – flown to the same minima as any conventional instrument rating. That is the capability the CB-IR(A) route delivers.
Why the full IR(A)
The rating that grows with your flying.
EASA offers two routes into instrument flying for aeroplane pilots. Both have their place – but if you want an instrument qualification without built-in ceilings, the CB-IR(A) is the route we recommend.
CB-IR(A) → Full IR(A) · Our recommendation
The complete instrument rating.
CB-IR is not a reduced rating. It is the competency-based path to the full EASA IR(A) – the conventional instrument rating with its full privileges.
- Standard IFR privileges and approach minima
- The internationally established form of instrument rating
- Prior instrument training and experience can be credited
- Same course fee as the BIR(A): €1,250 – the full rating at no extra theory cost
- The stronger foundation for pilots whose flying may grow – toward CPL, ATPL or professional operations
BIR(A) · The focused alternative
Purpose-built for European GA.
The Basic Instrument Rating is a streamlined EASA route with defined limitations – including additional margins above published approach minima – and validity within the EASA framework.
A highly efficient solution when its scope fits your mission profile.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions, answered.
Who can start the CB-IR(A)?
The route is designed for PPL(A) or CPL(A) holders. Instrument flight instruction and experience you have already gained can be taken into account in the practical part, subject to Part-FCL and an ATO assessment.
Why is the theory course 80 hours?
The competency-based route uses an approved 80-hour theoretical knowledge course under Part-FCL Appendix 6. You sit the same seven IR subjects – the course is more focused, not the knowledge level.
CB-IR(A) or BIR(A)?
If you want the full IR(A) with standard minima and maximum long-term flexibility, choose CB-IR(A). If your mission is firmly within European GA and the BIR limitations fit, the BIR(A) can be an efficient alternative.
Can I complete the flight training elsewhere?
Yes. The theory is completed with Cranfield; the practical competency-based training takes place with an EASA ATO of your choice – we are happy to help you plan the route.
Exact entry requirements, training credits, practical training requirements and licensing privileges are governed by the current applicable Part-FCL provisions and the competent authority. Cranfield will help you identify the appropriate route for your individual training history.
Master two worlds
BIR(A)
Beyond Instrument Rating.
Fly with confidence – wherever the journey leads. The BIR(A) theoretical training prepares you for instrument flight in both single- and multi-engine aeroplanes. Ideal for pilots who value maximum flexibility, operational capability and future opportunities.
