Why Cranfield Aviation

More than a theory school.
A partner throughout your journey.

Independent EASA theory training, built and delivered by aviation professionals who understand both aeroplanes and helicopters — and who stay responsible for the training until your theoretical journey is complete.

Everything important stays under one roof.

At Cranfield, theory training is not assembled from unrelated suppliers. We develop our own study material, publish our own aviation books, operate our own question bank, build our own learning platform and conduct the required instructor-led training ourselves. That gives us something increasingly rare in aviation training: direct responsibility for the complete learning experience.

Approved for serious training

A broad EASA approval scope — from first licence to airline-level theory.

Cranfield Aviation is an EASA Approved Training Organisation under German oversight. Our approved theoretical training portfolio spans ATPL, CPL, Instrument Rating and private-pilot pathways for both aeroplanes and helicopters. In addition, our distance-learning programmes are independently reviewed and approved by Germany's Central Agency for Distance Learning (ZFU), adding a second layer of educational scrutiny to the way our courses are designed and delivered.

Innovation is part of our history

When regulation evolves, we move with it.

We have consistently adopted new EASA training pathways early rather than waiting for the market to catch up. That mindset matters because regulation, licensing and training technology do not stand still.

01

ATPL(H)/IR

Cranfield was the first school in Germany to offer the full ATPL(H)/IR theoretical pathway rather than limiting helicopter students to the VFR route.

02

Competency-Based IR

We were the first German theory school to introduce the CB-IR theoretical course, giving instrument pilots access to the new competency-based pathway from the start.

03

Basic IR

We were among the early schools to implement the BIR and continue to integrate regulatory changes rapidly into course structure, teaching and study material.

Independent by design

We create the training we teach.

Publishing

Our own aviation books

We publish complete specialist book series for ATPL, CPL, IR and PPL training. They are available digitally in the LMS and as professionally produced printed editions.

Assessment

Our own question bank

Our EASA-focused question bank is integrated into the training and included as part of the student experience — not sold as a disconnected add-on.

Technology

Our own LMS

We develop the Cranfield learning platform ourselves. That means the technology can evolve with our courses rather than our courses being constrained by someone else's platform.

Media

More than static study guides

Video lessons are already part of the learning experience and are being expanded continuously to make complex theory more visual, interactive and easier to revisit.

One training system

Distance learning and live instruction are designed together.

Historically, many distance-learning students bought a remote course from one provider and then had to find another school willing to conduct the required classroom phase. Cranfield deliberately changed that model. We conduct the instructor-led phase ourselves, in German and English, with published schedules that students can plan around.

Study guidesThe same academic team maintains the remote-learning content and the live teaching framework.
Live online teachingApproved video-conference delivery means the required classroom phase can be completed remotely — no journey to Dortmund is normally required.
Regulatory updatesWhen regulations or authority requirements change, we can update the content, live teaching and assessment ecosystem as one coherent system.
Exam readinessOur responsibility does not stop when the LMS modules are finished. We stay with the student through the theoretical training and examination process.
Your theory should not lock you into one flight school

Train theory with Cranfield. Choose your practical school freely.

Once your theoretical training with us is complete, you remain free to choose the practical training organisation that best fits your location, aircraft, budget and career plans. You are not tied to a Cranfield-owned practical school or to a commission-driven partner. For the practical phase, you can select any suitable EASA-approved training organisation holding the approval required for your course.

Two worlds. Equal attention.

Aeroplane and helicopter training are both core to Cranfield.

Helicopter training is not an adapted aeroplane course in our system. Our training leadership understands both fixed-wing and rotary-wing operations, and our helicopter study material is written to reflect helicopter-specific systems, performance, operations and instrument-flying realities. The same principle applies across our aeroplane programmes: content should reflect the aircraft category the student is actually learning to operate.

Dedicated helicopter contentStudy guides and teaching designed around rotary-wing operations rather than reduced fixed-wing material.
Full ATPL(H)/IR focusWe treat IFR helicopter careers as a core professional pathway, not a niche afterthought.
Operational perspectiveTraining leadership combines instructional, theoretical and practical experience across both aircraft categories.
One standard of qualityThe same academic, regulatory and support expectations apply whether you fly aeroplanes or helicopters.
Trusted beyond the private student market

Institutions choose us too.

Federal Police · Germany

Instrument Rating theory

Cranfield has delivered outsourced theoretical instrument training for the German Federal Police over multiple years.

Flight Police · Austria

Government aviation training

We provide theoretical training services for the Austrian Ministry of the Interior and its aviation operations.

ADAC · Germany

Professional helicopter environment

We have repeatedly supported instrument-rating theory training in the professional helicopter sector for ADAC.

Complex cases welcome

We do not avoid the unusual files.

“We look for the shortest legitimate route — not the longest invoice.”
ICAO → EASA conversionsFAA, South African and other ICAO licences often need an individual licensing strategy rather than a standard course page.
Credits and reductionsIf a student qualifies for regulatory credit, we actively pursue the maximum legitimate training and examination relief available under the rules.
Authority coordinationWe are used to dealing with different EASA competent authorities and international licensing histories.
Special cases are normal hereCases that do not fit a mainstream checklist are exactly where experienced regulatory support adds value.
The part no LMS can replace

Every student is still a person, not a ticket number.

We want to know the story behind the training. When a student needs more time, faces a personal crisis, changes career direction or has a licensing problem years later, we listen. Many former students continue to contact us long after their course because the relationship does not end with the final exam.

Personal supportDirect access to people who understand both the training and the regulatory context.
Long-term relationshipAdvice does not automatically stop when the certificate is issued.
Student advocacyWe look for legitimate credits and solutions that serve the student's interests.
Time when it mattersComplex circumstances are handled as individual cases, not pushed through a script.
Built for international students

Global training needs more than an English translation.

Exams across EASA

Our students sit theoretical examinations with the LBA, Austro Control, French and other EASA authorities. Coordinating different national authorities is daily business for us.

German & English

Student administration and instructor-led training are available in German and English, making international planning far more predictable.

White-label partners

Other flight schools license our study material and learning technology under their own brands — a strong external test of the quality and scalability of the system.

16+ years in EuropeAn established training organisation with a long operating history in the European aviation-training market.
Owner-led & independentStrategic decisions remain close to the people responsible for training, content and students.
Partners we know personallyOur practical-training network is based on long-standing relationships and quality — not on selling student leads for commission.
Your training deserves a school that takes responsibility for it

Independent in structure. International in outlook. Personal when it matters.

Whether you are beginning your first licence, preparing for a professional career, converting an ICAO licence or solving an unusual regulatory case, we are ready to look at the complete picture.

Course availability, regulatory credits and examination arrangements depend on the applicable licence route and competent authority. Cranfield Aviation evaluates individual cases against the current regulatory framework before confirming a training or conversion plan.
