CHOOSE THE RIGHT ROUTE

One IFR goal. Different pathways.

For most aeroplane pilots, the competency-based CB-IR(A) route is the more efficient choice because it is designed around competency and can recognise relevant prior instrument experience. The conventional modular IR remains important — and for helicopters, IR(H) follows the modular route because CB-IR is an aeroplane pathway.

RECOMMENDED FOR MOST AEROPLANE PILOTS

CB-IR(A)

A focused competency-based route to the full EASA IR(A), designed for PPL(A) or CPL(A) holders and structured to take account of previous instrument training and experience.

  • Aeroplanes only
  • 80-hour approved theoretical knowledge course under Appendix 6 Section Aa
  • Competency-based practical pathway
  • Ideal for pilots seeking full IFR privileges efficiently

CLASSIC MODULAR ROUTE

Modular IR(A)

The established modular route for aeroplane pilots. It leads to the same full IR(A) privileges but normally involves a broader prescribed training footprint than CB-IR(A).

  • Aeroplanes
  • 150-hour approved theoretical knowledge course
  • Structured modular training route
  • Available where the classic route better fits the training history

HELICOPTER IFR

IR(H). Built for rotary-wing operations.

Helicopter IFR demands its own operational perspective. The modular IR(H) course prepares PPL(H), CPL(H) and ATPL(H) pilots for instrument operations in helicopters — particularly relevant to demanding professional environments such as offshore, HEMS and other IFR-capable operations.

Important: there is no CB-IR(H) pathway. Helicopter pilots use the modular IR(H) route. EASA Appendix 6 specifies a 150-hour theoretical knowledge course for modular IR(H), with defined credits available in certain cases.

READY FOR IFR?

Choose the pathway that fits your aircraft.

Aeroplane pilots should normally evaluate CB-IR(A) first. Helicopter pilots continue via modular IR(H). Our training team can help you select the appropriate route before enrolment.
