WHO WE ARE

A theory school designed for modern aviation.

Cranfield Aviation Training School (Deutschland) GmbH is an EASA Approved Training Organisation specialising in theoretical knowledge training for professional and private pilots. From our headquarters in Dortmund, we support students in Germany, across Europe and internationally.

We combine structured distance learning with instructor-led teaching, digital training technology and personal support. Because we develop and publish our own learning materials, we are not simply reselling somebody else's training concept. We can shape the complete learning journey ourselves — from study guide to progress test, from question training to final exam preparation.

That independence matters. It lets us adapt quickly, keep the learning experience consistent and focus on what pilots actually need: clarity, flexibility and a reliable path to the next licence or rating.

THE CRANFIELD DIFFERENCE

More than a theory provider.

We bring content, technology, instruction and aviation experience together in one training ecosystem.

01

Independent by design

Our study materials, digital learning content and training tools are developed and maintained within our own organisation and publishing environment. That gives us control over quality, updates and the student experience.

02

Flexible without compromise

Our distance-learning model is built for real lives and real flying careers. Students can study internationally, combine training with work and receive support from instructors throughout the programme.

03

Exam focused

Training is structured around understanding first and examination performance second — with progress tests, question training, instructor-led sessions and school examinations forming one coherent pathway.

04

Aviation experience

Many of our instructors bring decades of operational and teaching experience. The result is theory that stays connected to the cockpit, not just the syllabus.

OUR HERITAGE

From Cranfield to a global classroom.

Our story traces its roots to the United Kingdom and Cranfield Airport. What began as an aviation training business grew into an international approach to theoretical knowledge training. The German organisation was established in Dortmund in 2010 and developed into an independent EASA ATO with a strong focus on flexible distance learning and proprietary course content.

2000

Cranfield Aviation Training School is founded at Cranfield Airport in the United Kingdom, close to the renowned Cranfield University.

2008

With a growing European student base, the UK operation moves to strategically located Luton, strengthening its international connectivity.

2010

Cranfield Aviation Training School (Deutschland) GmbH is established in Dortmund to serve the rapidly growing German-speaking and European market.

Today

Cranfield offers the complete spectrum of EASA theoretical knowledge training, with particular expertise in helicopter theory and ICAO-to-EASA licence conversions — supporting pilots in German and English across borders and throughout their professional journey.

PIONEERING EASA THEORY TRAINING

One school. The complete EASA theory world.

Cranfield has repeatedly moved ahead of the market. We were the first school in Germany to offer the complete ATPL(H)/IR theoretical knowledge course and the first to introduce theoretical CB-IR training — milestones that still define how we think: anticipate what pilots need next, then build it properly.

Today, our portfolio spans the full spectrum of EASA theoretical knowledge training — from PPL and instrument qualifications through CPL and ATPL, for aeroplanes and helicopters.

Helicopters have always been part of our DNA.

Rotary-wing aviation has never been a secondary product at Cranfield. ATPL(H), ATPL(H)/IR and helicopter-specific expertise have been at the heart of our school for years — alongside our fixed-wing programmes.

Aviation does not stop at Europe's borders. Neither do we.

We have developed particular expertise in helping experienced ICAO licence holders transition into the EASA system. Our conversion pathways recognise the knowledge and operational experience pilots already possess and connect international flying careers efficiently with European licensing requirements.

QUALITY WITH OWNERSHIP

We build what we teach.

Our learning materials are not an afterthought. Textbooks, eBooks, web-based training, progress testing and question training are part of one coordinated system. Our own specialist publishing activities allow us to develop and distribute aviation learning content independently.

This makes the learning experience more consistent and gives our training team the freedom to improve content when regulations, exam standards or student needs evolve.

REGULATED · RECOGNISED · TRUSTED

Two layers of regulatory oversight. One standard of quality.

Cranfield Aviation Training School is not only an approved EASA Approved Training Organisation under the supervision of the German Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt). We are also a state-recognised distance-learning provider in Germany, with our distance-learning programmes approved by the Zentralstelle für Fernunterricht (ZFU) in Cologne.

This means our training is subject to regulatory oversight from both the aviation and distance-learning sectors. Course structure, learning materials, student support and instructional quality are not left to internal standards alone — they are reviewed within formal approval and quality-assurance frameworks.

For our students, that means confidence in both aviation compliance and educational quality.

PEOPLE BEFORE PLATFORMS

Technology helps. Instructors make the difference.

Digital training gives pilots freedom, but aviation education still depends on experienced people. Our instructors support students through complex subjects, exam preparation and the decisions that come with professional flight training.

Many members of our instructional team have been part of aviation and adult education for decades. That experience shapes how we explain difficult concepts, how we prepare students for authority examinations and how we keep the training practical.

"Our job is not simply to deliver theory. It is to make the next step in a pilot's career possible."
