EASA · BASIC INSTRUMENT RATING

BIR(A).IFR capability, built for real-world GA.

The Basic Instrument Rating is EASA's flexible, competency-based route into instrument flying for aeroplane pilots. Designed around general aviation, it brings genuine IFR capability with a more focused training pathway – while accepting defined operational limitations.

YOUR NEXT LEVEL

More freedom than VFR.
Less complexity than a full IR route.

For experienced private and business pilots, weather can be the difference between a useful aeroplane and one that stays in the hangar. The BIR(A) was created to make instrument flying more accessible to European general aviation through modular, competency-based training.

It is not, however, equivalent to a full IR(A) – BIR privileges carry defined limitations, including higher approach minima. That distinction matters, and Cranfield will help you choose the rating that fits the missions you actually intend to fly.

Who is the BIR(A) designed for?

It is aimed primarily at aeroplane pilots in general aviation who want practical IFR capability through a flexible, competency-based EASA route, without necessarily pursuing the full IR(A) from the outset.

Is the BIR(A) the same as a full IR(A)?

No. The BIR is a distinct rating with defined limitations – including additional margins above published approach minima. A full IR(A), which can be obtained through the CB-IR(A) route, provides broader instrument privileges.

Is the BIR internationally recognised like a conventional IR?

The BIR is an EASA-specific rating. Pilots planning operations or licence use outside the EASA framework should carefully consider whether the full IR(A) is the better long-term choice.

Which route does Cranfield recommend?

If your goal is maximum flexibility and the broader privileges of a full instrument rating, we generally recommend CB-IR(A). If your mission is predominantly European GA flying and the BIR limitations fit your operation, the BIR(A) can be a highly efficient solution.
